Our Doulas

Cara Furio

Postpartum Doula, Certified Lactation Counselor
carafurioWe live in a fast paced society and often find it difficult to slow down and enjoy life. We get caught up in thinking we must have the best of everything, including the “perfect” baby and the “perfect” nursery for our “perfect” baby. We often live so fast we don’t know how to enjoy the process of pregnancy and childbirth, and then we rush to get baby onto a schedule so we can return to the “rat race.” Where does this madness end?

As a Woman, Mother, Grandmother and Doula, I’ll let you in on a secret…. You can and should slow down and enjoy this precious time. Fatigue during pregnancy is the body’s way of saying, “there’s an important person growing inside and you need rest to allow this person to develop.” It takes 40 weeks to develop into a person who can live another 80-90 years. And the pain during labor is an indicator that your body is working to open up and deliver “your” baby, and the contractions actually massage and prepare her for life. Too often we want to rush through pregnancy and fear childbirth, and want to just get it all over with. And then we move into “parenthood!” And you thought pregnancy and childbirth were tough?!! Just wait!

As your Doula, I’ll assist you in SLOWING down to enjoy being a New Mom, New Dad, New Family. Don’t miss this precious time. I tell you from experience, baby grows up quickly! Someday you’ll look back and relish the sleepless nights during which you lingered a little longer and gazed into “alert” baby eyes and/or spent a few more minutes cuddling your sleeping baby. I’ll take care of you so you can enjoy getting to know your baby, this unique little person who doesn’t fit the stereotypical baby in all the books you’ve read. And I’ll offer support when you are stressed and cry, “What are you talking about, and this is a nightmare! I’m exhausted, my body aches, I’m engorged, baby won’t nurse right, my needs are important too, I’m depressed and I feel guilty because I should be enjoying these times!!”

I won’t go into my training and qualifications here, as to be part of Beautiful Beginnings I’ve met the highest of standards. Suffice to say I’ve been a Doula since 2003, with a little time off for my own personal needs, and I LOVE this line of work, everything about it. I love helping new parents slow down and find the “calm” in the storm, ride the rough waters of early parenthood, and develop a lifelong loving bond with your child. I look forward to hearing from you!
